“Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7).
These instructions are strikingly clear and to the point. They confirm another set of instructions set forth in 1 Peter 5: 6-10: “Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober; be vigilant, because your adversary, the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith.” The Amplified Bible translates verse 7 as follows: ” … casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.”
God wants us to be humble enough to admit that we can’t fight our own battles and win our own victories in ourselves. He wants us to come to Him for the help we need. We cast the problems onto Him, and He fills us with His anointing and power to win. Not only that: He also goes to work on the situations with all the forces of Heaven working and fighting on our behalf.
The main key is for us to MAKE THE DECISION to side with God and His Word rather than with the devil and his lies. Whether those lies come to us in the form of temptation to sin, relatives who are caught up in addition or demonic activity, a doctor’s report that says we can’t get well, the loss of a job, or any other attack on our lives, our response needs to be the same. We need to run to God’s Word and find out what He says about the situation.
When we do that, we will find — every single time — that our God has a solution. Once we see that solution presented in the Word, our next move should be to turn on the devil and refuse to accept what he has done or what he says about our chances of victory over it. And we have to be very careful; most Christians fail at this point because the lies about their situations are coming at them in the form of “worldly wisdom.” They hear the reports in the terms of the doctors, lawyers, politicians, and specialists of the world who say what the world has taught them. But God tells us in James 3:15 that the wisdom of this world is demonic. So we have to recognize that although the reports and the prognosis for failure come to us in terms that may sound “reasonable” to the world, if they do not agree with God’s Word, they are wrong.
We must make a decision to believe God INSTEAD OF the natural situations and reports. God tells us clearly that everything natural will pass away, but His Word will abide forever. It is His Word, after all, that created everything natural. (Genesis 1, John 1). And His Word has the power to change those natural things. That’s why speaking God’s Word to a mountain will force it to move. The physical mountain cannot refuse to obey the Word that created it in the first place.
We must refuse what is contrary to the Word. Actively resist it. Command it to be gone from us and from our lives. Then we speak God’s Word over the situation in faith and command it to change and line up with that Word.
But remember: resisting the enemy works ONLY when we are submitting to God first.
